On March 2, 2018, NASA selected IRVINE03 to take part in NASA's ninth round of NASA CubeSat candidates. IRVINE03 will include a technology demonstration of a Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) sensor to measure x-rays from the Crab Nebula Pulsar and a new electrospray thruster quad-pack for turning and pointing the 1U CubeSat.  It also has an S-Band software defined radio, an improved laser communication system, larger deployable solar array, and a new camera for star tracking.  Launch of IRVINE03 is expected in the second quarter of 2020 to a Sun-Synchronous low Earth polar orbit.
